Common Landscape Liabilities to Avoid

Common Landscape Liabilities to Avoid - Blog - Brilar - brilar_photo

Proper maintenance of your grounds is important for several reasons. An orderly and attractive property draws customers to your building, instills pride in employees and makes tenants proud. A well-maintained commercial space can also protect you from lawsuits and limit your exposure to liability. On the other hand, a property that has untrimmed trees, poor lighting and crumbling parking lots is just asking for trouble. When you avoid the most common causes of liability lawsuits on your property you make your company stronger.

Site Evaluation

A site evaluation by an experienced landscape company can alert you to potential problems on your property. At Brilar, we want to make sure your property is beautiful and safe. The good news is most landscape deficiencies are fairly easy to identify. With a site evaluation, we can identify those as well as potential problems, stopping them before they get worse. If you are walking through your property and happen to notice any of the following, give us a call!

The 4 Most Common Landscape Problems

  1. Untrimmed trees and vegetation. A dead or dying tree brings with it the danger of falling limbs. They can break without warning and fall on vehicles and injure people. Also, unruly vegetation in the form of overgrown shrubs can limit visibility in parking lots and cause accidents.
  2. Poor or nonexistent lighting. If you have people on your property after dark it is important to install adequate lighting. Motion-activated lights allow people to see where they are going and provide a higher level of safety and security.
  3. Snow and ice buildup.  Ice and snow should be cleared away from your parking lots, sidewalks, and buildings as soon as possible. Falling ice from rooftops and slips and falls are among the most common reasons for lawsuits against companies. Serious injuries can result in large rewards to plaintiffs.
  4. Parking lot neglect. Failure to regularly maintain your parking lot can result in potholes, crumbling asphalt, and poor signage. Any of these factors increase the chance of an accident or a fall.
